Foie Gras

Amazon.com sells foie gras produced at Elevages Perigord, Canada's largest foie gras facility and a site of considerable cruelty. Please read more about the Farm Sanctuary campaign against Amazon here or learn about foie gras at our foie gras page.

Amazon also sells magazines and DVDs promoting these disgusting "sports", insisting that "refusing to sell books or magazines simply because their messages may offend is censorship." [1] In the past, however, they have dropped several products from their website due to complaints, including Nazi propaganda, religious books, and a Star Wars book cover.[2]

The Humane Society of the United States asked Amazon to remove cockfighting paraphenalia from its website in 2005, and afterwards launched a lawsuit claiming that Amazon is violating a U.S. federal law which makes it illegal to create, possess or sell a depiction of animal cruelty for financial gain. Learn more about the lawsuit here.

This is not an issue of protecting free speech. "We think that Amazon should have the right to sell magazines with pro-cockfighting editorial," stated HSUS president Wayne Pacelle. "But they cross the line when they advertise the sale of contraband."[3]

Cockfighting has been illegal in Canada and Great Britain since the 19th century, and in 2007 it was banned in the United States. Learn more about cockfighting here.

Please boycott Amazon until they stop selling foie gras and animal fighting paraphenalia!
